Plot summary
Trace Jordan's brother is murdered and their horses are stolen. Following the tracks, Trace identifies three riders: one wears Mexican spurs, one limps, and one smokes cheroots. In Esperanza, he finds the sheriff's office destroyed and learns Joe Sutton controls the town. The stolen horses now carry the Sutton brand, and the riders work for Sutton. Trace confronts Joe Sutton at his ranch and wounds him. Sutton orders his son Jack, foreman Ben, and ten hands to catch Trace before he can bring Army law to Esperanza. Wounded while escaping, Trace is hidden and helped by Maria Colton, a woman of Mexican descent. With Trace out of reach, Sutton hires Jacob Lantz, a part-Indian tracker, to find him.
