Plot summary
Winnie Layden buys an 18th-century tavern from Professor Nathaniel Billings, who sells it to clear his mortgage debts, and she intends to run the place as a hotel. Billings keeps a laboratory in the basement. The housekeeper and the hired hand, Amelia Jones and Ebenezer, remain at the inn. Winnie's ex-husband, Bill, is against the sale, arrives too late to stop it, and stays at the inn for a few days. Winnie does not know what work Billings carries out in the basement laboratory.

- Columbia polled film critics to name the ten best on-screen villains, expecting Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre to place high; the top three were all Disney characters, so the studio scrapped the publicity campaign.
- Boris Karloff's last film under his Columbia Pictures contract was shot during the summer 1942 hiatus of the Broadway play Arsenic and Old Lace, in which he was then appearing.
