Fortunio Bonanova

Biography

Fortunio Bonanova was a Spanish baritone singer who became a character actor in Hollywood films, theater and television, and who sometimes produced and directed. Born in Palma, he trained in music with the Italian teacher Giovachini and made his singing debut at Palma's Teatre Principal in Tannhäuser in 1921; he directed his own Don Juan in 1924. After singing opera and zarzuela in New York, he returned to the United States in 1936 and took increasingly larger roles in English-language pictures. He played the opera coach Signor Matiste in Citizen Kane (1941), Don Miguel in The Black Swan (1942), General Sebastiano in Five Graves to Cairo (1943), Fernando in For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) and Sam Garlopis in Double Indemnity (1944), and was an uncredited technical consultant on Blood and Sand (1941). He later worked in television and died in 1969.
