Plot summary
In A.D. 1258 Mongol troops storm Baghdad. The caliph Hassan slips out of his captors' hands with Ali, his small son, and the two find shelter in the house of Prince Cassim. There Ali and Amara, Prince Cassim's daughter, who dread being parted, bind themselves to each other in a blood-bond. Ali then sees his father die; he swears revenge and runs for the desert. He comes upon a mountainside where riders emerge from a concealed cave, and inside he finds their stores of treasure. The riders discover the boy sleeping among it. When they learn whose son he is, their chief Old Baba raises him as his own and calls him Ali Baba. Ten years on, the forty thieves raid the Mongols and share what they take with the poor, and Ali Baba leads them.
