Plot summary
In the years after World War I, displaced families arrive in Berlin, among them a Polish professor and his relatives. They find a place to live, but food is hard to come by, and some days the household shares one potato per person along with horse turnips. Inga, a war orphan the family has taken in, finds work collecting household basics and puts aside what she can toward the dowry she needs in order to marry Paul. Paul has returned from the front weakened by poison gas, and the two want to build a life together. He builds a hut and plants a garden, hoping to grow enough potatoes for the winter.
