Plot summary
Chris Hale comes to a small town in Ohio and knocks at the door of the house where he grew up. The widow living there now, Mrs. Brentman, offers him a room, and he finds work in shipping at the Corelli shoe factory. There he meets Elaine Corelli, his boss's paralyzed daughter, who is amused when he tells her that as a boy he carried newspapers to her door and admired her from afar. Elaine asks her father A. J. Corelli to give him a better job in sales. Chris turns down the offer and tells Corelli that Elaine will hear his reasons from him. The explanation he gives her is vague. He is a confessed gambler and a drifter.
