Plot summary

Gen. George S. Patton spends the months after World War II at a desk, reassigned by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower after Patton used former Nazis to help rebuild occupied Germany and defended the practice in public. His new task is to supervise a staff of clerks writing the official history of the American military in the war. On December 9, 1945, the day before he is due to leave for the United States, an automobile accident injures his spinal column and paralyzes him. From his hospital bed he looks back: his father's stories of his grandfather's service in the Civil War, which sent him to West Point, his marriage to Beatrice, and his push for tanks in the Army.
