Plot summary
Charley lives in a rough block of East New York, and a beating by Manny Fraker's gang leaves him dying when Paul Kersey arrives to visit. The police find Paul standing over the body and charge him with murder. At the station, Inspector Richard Shriker knows who he is and proposes an arrangement: Paul may go after the punks, provided he passes on what he learns about the gang so the department can make arrests and headlines. Paul moves into Charley's apartment in a building under gang control, where the elderly tenants, among them Charley's friend Bennett Cross and the Kaprovs, Eli and Erica, are frightened of Manny's crew.

- Charles Bronson haggled with Cannon over his fee, so the role of Paul Kersey was offered to Chuck Norris, who turned it down, claiming that the violence in the movie was too negative.
- The original working title Death Wish III was changed to Death Wish 3 because the Cannon Group ran a survey and found that nearly half of the U.S. population could not read Roman numerals.
- Kirk Taylor, who played "The Giggler", said Winner was unhappy about his tardiness one day but quickly dismissed it and called Stanley Kubrick, then in London looking for actors for Full Metal Jacket, to recommend Taylor, who was given a role in that film.
- Rocky Taylor says Winner turned up the height of the flames while cameras rolled without consulting him. Taylor completed the stunt but missed the boxes by "about a foot", breaking his pelvis and back and suffering burns. He says Winner later visited him in hospital with newspaper photographers in tow.
- Although Jimmy Page is credited as composer, he had no involvement with the movie. Winner reused Page's score for Death Wish II in the editing stage and had the music rearranged for the actual soundtrack, with Mike Moran credited as "arranger and conductor" on synthesizers.
