Plot summary
David Greene, seventeen and from a working-class family, is given a scholarship to St. Matthew's Academy, chosen for his grades and his football. On his way to the school he is insulted for being Jewish in a fight with a motorcycle gang. At St. Matthew's he meets his roommate Chris Reece and teammates Rip Van Kelt, Charlie Dillon, Jack Connors and Mack McGivern, popular students from wealthy families. He learns the school's honor code and hears the antisemitism that runs through it, and he chooses not to say that he is Jewish. His play makes him the football team's hero and draws the attention of Sally Wheeler, a debutante Charlie claims as his own. David prays in the chapel in private.
