Plot summary
Mark Kaminski once worked for the FBI, until he beat a suspect who had sexually assaulted and murdered a young girl; prosecutor Marvin Baxter forced him to choose between resigning and prosecution. He is now sheriff of a rural North Carolina county, where his wife Amy is unhappy with the life they have. A hit squad ambushes a mob informant the FBI is protecting at an isolated cabin, killing him and the agents with him, including Blair Shannon, son of senior agent Harry Shannon. Shannon wants revenge and offers Kaminski an unsanctioned assignment: get inside the organization of Luigi Patrovita, the most powerful of the Chicago Outfit bosses, and bring it down. Kaminski stages his own death in an oil company explosion and takes the name Joseph P. Brenner, a convicted felon.
