Biography

Gary Busey is an American actor who grew up in Oklahoma and began his career as a drummer before turning to film and television. After small television and film roles in the 1970s, he broke into features with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and appeared in A Star Is Born (1976). Playing Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story (1978) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor. He went on to take prominent supporting roles in action films including Lethal Weapon (1987), Predator 2 (1990), Point Break (1991), Under Siege (1992) and Drop Zone (1994), and he also appeared in The Firm (1993), Black Sheep (1996), Lost Highway (1997) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). Later credits include voice work for the Grand Theft Auto video games and a 2019 Off-Broadway role in the musical Only Human.

    Busey started in showbusiness as the Rubber Band's drummer. He is credited as "Teddy Jack Eddy," playing drums on several Leon Russell recordings, a character he created while a cast member of a Tulsa, Oklahoma television comedy show.

    Busey created the name Teddy Jack Eddy after fellow Tulsa performer Gailard Sartain told him his character needed a name and suggested taking three: Teddy, Jack and Eddy.

    In Michael Cimino's buddy action caper Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Busey took a supporting role for his major film debut, acting alongside Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.

    In 2014, Busey took part in Celebrity Big Brother 14 and won it, making him the first American to do so.

  5. Beyond film

    In 2019, Busey took the role of God in the Off-Broadway musical Only Human, staged at the Theatre at St. Clements in New York under director NJ Agwuna. He explained that portraying God came easily since he was believing rather than acting.
