Plot summary

Brian Kelly is a high school student in Orange County, California, who skates when he should be in class and has been arrested more than once for stunts his parents cannot control. The one family member he connects with is Vinh, his adopted Vietnamese brother, who works as a shipping clerk for a relief fund that sends medical supplies to Vietnam. Going over the records, Vinh finds an error he cannot explain and takes it to his employer, Colonel Trac, who dismisses him when he keeps asking. Vinh enters the warehouse that handles the shipments and is caught by its owner, Ed Lawndale. Then Vinh is found hanged, and the authorities call it a suicide. Brian does not accept that answer and begins looking for the truth himself.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gleaming the Cube (1989)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The title refers to the cryptic question "Have you ever gleemed inside a cube?" that Garry Scott Davis asked Neil Blender in an interview in the December 1983 issue of Thrasher magazine.
  • The Anaheim motel in the movie, the "Atomic Age Lodge", was really Stovall's Cosmic Age Lodge on Katella Avenue, across the street from the then-Disneyland parking lot; it was demolished in the late 1990s to make room for Disney California Adventure.
  • According to Peralta, locations were scouted from the sky: he surveyed Orange County by helicopter looking for pools, hills and different street situations that might work for skating, then landed to approach the people for permission.
  • Although the film had a relatively low box office turnout and mixed to negative reviews, it gained a significant cult following through basic cable replays on networks such as USA and the VHS and later DVD market, and was particularly popular among skateboard enthusiasts.
