Plot summary
Drew Dixon hides in his family's home while soldiers search for him; his mother has already given one son to the war. His parents hand him $100, their photograph and his brother's watch, and send him west. In St. Joseph, Missouri, Jake Rumsey pistol-whips him and takes part of the money. Jake leads a gang of petty thieves. When Jake visits Reverend Clum's house and pockets household goods, Drew attacks him, demanding his money back, and after a struggle Jake persuades him to join. The gang's other members are the brothers Jim Bob and Loney Logan, Arthur Simms and ten-year-old Boog Bookin. The boys head west hoping to improve their fortunes, and at night Drew reads to them from Jane Eyre.
