Charles Tyner
Biography
Charles Tyner was an American actor of film, television and the stage. Born in Danville, Virginia, he began on Broadway, appearing in Orpheus Descending in 1957, and took a role in Sweet Bird of Youth two years later with Paul Newman. His first screen work came in 1959, an uncredited role in That Kind of Woman (1959). In 1967 he played Boss Higgins, a cruel prison guard, in Cool Hand Luke, again with Newman, and went on to steady work as a character actor in films such as The Reivers, Lawman, Harold and Maude (1971) and The Cowboys (1972), which brought him a Western Heritage Award. He appeared opposite Burt Reynolds in the prison comedy The Longest Yard (1974), and later in Emperor of the North Pole, Pete's Dragon (1977) and Pulse (1988). On television he played Howard Rodman in Father Murphy. His final screen role was in the 2014 short Lucidia, and he died in 2017.
