Plot summary
The Atlanta Braves are preparing for the upcoming draft, and one of the top prospects is Bo Gentry, a North Carolina high school hitter. The veteran scout Gus Lobel gets the assignment, though Phillip Sanderson, an ambitious junior executive who wants the general manager's post, argues that Gus is too old for it. Gus's eyesight is failing and his contract is nearly up, and Pete Klein, his boss and friend, asks Gus's daughter Mickey, a lawyer chasing a partnership at her firm, to go along. Mickey and her father have grown distant. Also at the games is Johnny Flanagan, a former pitcher Gus once scouted, now scouting for the Red Sox.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- A year after release, producer Ryan Brooks sued Warner, the producers, two talent agencies, screenwriter Brown and Don Handfield in federal court, alleging the film's screenplay bore striking similarities to Omaha, an unproduced script he had commissioned from Handfield.
- Brooks claimed Handfield took the unfinished Omaha script after a falling out over a rewrite, then conspired with his agent Charles Ferraro to present it, with the setting changed from college baseball to the major leagues, as the work of Brown.
- Warner's lawyers countered with evidence they said proved Brown had written the first drafts as early as 1996, including an affidavit from a computer forensics expert authenticating the timestamps on a floppy disk holding them.
- In February 2014 Judge Dale S. Fischer granted the studio's motion, saying Brooks had overstated the similarities between the two scripts and that, even if he had not, the idea of a father-daughter baseball story is not protectable as a matter of copyright law.
- The film grossed $48,963,137 worldwide, the second lowest take for a film featuring Clint Eastwood as an actor, just ahead of Blood Work, which took $31,794,718 around the world.
- Eastwood had not acted in anything since Gran Torino in 2008, and had not taken an acting role in a film directed by somebody else since his cameo in 1995's Casper.
- Brooks later sued again, this time alleging only breach of contract and naming neither Warner nor Eastwood as defendants, demanding $5 million in damages, before voluntarily dismissing the case in August 2016.
