Plot summary
The crime boss Rusty Pirone is facing another trial, and the prosecutor Daniel Graham is determined to convict him. Pirone gives the problem to Tommy Vesey, a burned-out former corrupt cop, who works out that one juror who refuses to agree would be enough to set his boss free. Vesey investigates the jurors one by one, looking for a secret to blackmail them with, and when that gets him nowhere he turns to Valerie Alston, a single mother he believes can be pushed into following orders. He warns her that if she does not cooperate, her young son and her father will be killed. Graham, meanwhile, loses his main witness before the trial can begin, and sets his investigator, John Boyle, to finding another.
