Plot summary

Robert Glenn has left the Army and settled his family in Chicago, home of Dance TV, the dance show his daughter Janey loves. At her Catholic girls' school Janey meets Lynne Stone, who is just as devoted to the program. When Dance TV holds auditions for new regular dancers, the two friends are determined to try out, but Robert refuses to let Janey go downtown, and his rules leave her little chance to practice. Janey goes with Lynne anyway. At the auditions, wealthy Natalie Sands nearly hits Lynne with her car while parking. Janey has taken gymnastics and dance classes for ten years.

  • In July 1984 New World announced a film inspired by Cyndi Lauper's hit song, buying the rights to the original 1979 song and title from songwriter Robert Hazard's publishing company; Lauper refused to appear in it or to let her version, or the lyrics she added, be used.
  • Helen Hunt recalled that they were looking for “Goldie (Hawn) types” when she was called in, but the director, Alan Metter, pulled her aside and said, “Sarah would kill to work with you.”
