Plot summary
Lyle Swann competes in the Baja 1000, a cross-country desert race, and the high-tech equipment he fits to his motorcycle keeps failing him. Off course, he rides into a time travel experiment that uses maser velocity acceleration to send objects, among them a monkey named Esther G., into the past. The field carries Swann to November 5, 1877, and he rides away before the scientists running the experiment can bring him back. In a spring he meets a gang of outlaws under Porter Reese, who wants the motorcycle for himself, and the outlaws chase him into the village of San Marcos, where his red suit and dirt bike make the villagers take him for El Diablo. Claire Cygne gives him a place to hide.
