Plot summary
Dan Logan runs a sheep ranch in Wyoming. He takes his son Chris on a camping trip, and the boy chooses to sleep outside the tent. In the morning Chris is lying unconscious and bleeding from the nose, and sheep on the range show the same bleeding. At a nearby hospital, doctors run tests Dan cannot make sense of. Holliford, the Army major who ordered them, knows the two were exposed to MX-3, a deadly nerve gas dispersed through the air, and that Chris, sleeping in the open, took the heavier dose.

- Rage's story comes from the Dugway sheep incident of March 1968, when an F-4 Phantom leaked the nerve agent VX over Utah's Skull Valley during tests and killed as many as 6,000 sheep.
- Writers Philip Friedman and Dan Kleinman brought Fred Weintraub a script based on the Dugway case and added poisoned humans to it, an outcome that was never verified in the real accident.
- The same Dugway sheep incident that inspired Rage also inspired Stephen King's The Stand and the "Three Dead Cows at Makapuu" episodes of Hawaii Five-O.
