Plot summary
At John Hughes High School in Southern California, head cheerleader Priscilla breaks up with Jake Wyler, the football star, and takes up with Les to spite him. Austin, a friend of Jake's, bets him that he can turn Janey Briggs, a nerdy girl with glasses and a ponytail, into the prom queen. Janey wants no change in herself and feels nothing for Jake, but he courts her anyway. His sister Catherine interferes, as does Ricky Lipman, Janey's best friend, who admires her from a distance, and Jake's memories of his football career. Mitch, Janey's younger brother, pledges with his friends Ox and Bruce to lose their virginity by graduation, and Mitch tries to win over Amanda Becker with a love letter.
