Plot summary
On a transatlantic crossing from Europe to New York, the well-known playboy Nickie Ferrante meets Terry McKay, and each is already involved with someone else. Meetings aboard the ship turn into a friendship. When the liner anchors near Villefranche-sur-Mer, Terry goes with Nickie to visit his grandmother Janou, who tells Terry that Nickie paints well but discards most of his work because it falls short of what he wants. Terry sees Nickie in a new light. As the ship approaches New York, the two make a plan: six months later, with the old relationships ended and new careers begun, they will meet on the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

- Cary Grant first worked with Leo McCarey on The Awful Truth, disliked his improvisational methods but warmed to them, and later wished he had starred in Love Affair. Years afterwards he convinced McCarey to remake it with Grant in Charles Boyer's role as the male lead.
- The remake reused the screenplay Delmer Daves and Donald Ogden Stewart had written for Love Affair, but Stewart was left out of the credits because he had been blacklisted.
- Nora Ephron's 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, was partly inspired by An Affair to Remember, especially its ending, and uses references, clips and the theme song from the earlier film throughout.
- Cary Grant was reportedly grumpy during filming because hypnotherapy with his wife had made him dislike smoking. He also had an operation during production to treat a lump on his forehead caused by a childhood injury.
