Plot summary
Joan Prentice, an heiress, meets Jerry Corbett at a party. He works for a Chicago newspaper and thinks of himself as a playwright, and he drinks heavily. They begin going out together, and he proposes. Her father objects to the match, and Joan accepts anyway, though Jerry earns little and has a problem with alcohol. Jerry is badly drunk on the night of their engagement party, which falls apart, and Joan stays with him. The plays he writes are turned down and he fights his craving for drink. Joan's encouragement keeps him writing, and for a stretch he stays away from it.

- Many newspapers refused to publicize Dorothy Arzner's Merrily We Go to Hell because of its racy title, an example of the sensationalistic titles common in the pre-Code era; the title is a line Fredric March's character says while making a toast.
- Paramount's story department resisted the material, which had been held up as a frank story about divorce; David Lewis passed it to Dorothy Arzner, who was looking for a story to star Sylvia Sidney, and she pushed it through, liking it enormously.
