Plot summary
In occupied Heidelberg after the war, French Army Captain Henri Rochard is handed the task of recruiting Schindler, a lens maker. American Lieutenant Catherine Gates, with whom he has quarreled, is assigned as his driver. Army regulations allow only her to operate the motorcycle, so he rides in the sidecar as they travel to Bad Nauheim and back. The two fall in love and marry. Because she is an American soldier, his only route to the United States is a visa as her spouse under the War Brides Act, and the paperwork and regulations that follow call him a wife and keep the pair apart.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Filming I Was a Male War Bride ran more than eight months as illness swept the cast and crew: Ann Sheridan caught pleurisy that turned into pneumonia, Howard Hawks broke out in hives, and Cary Grant's hepatitis and jaundice shut production down for three months while he regained about 30 pounds.
- When screenwriter Charles Lederer fell ill, his friend Orson Welles did him a favor and wrote part of a short chase scene for the film.
- The film was based on "Male War Bride Trial to Army", a biography of Henri Rochard, the pen name of Roger Charlier, a Belgian who married an American nurse.
