Plot summary
Clemson Reade is a business tycoon who has marriage on his mind, and Effie is a diplomat in the American service. The two are a modern couple, but her work leaves no room for pleasure, so Reade breaks the engagement. He becomes engaged instead to Princess Tarji, whose father rules Bukistan, an oil-rich country in the middle of trade talks with the United States. Tarji has been trained in the arts of pleasing men, and Reade sees in her the old-fashioned wife he wants. Because the oil talks matter, and with an eye on political relations during the courtship, the State Department puts a diplomat on the duty of seeing that protocol holds until the wedding. The one given that job is Effie.
