Plot summary
Johnny Case met Julia Seton on a holiday in Lake Placid, New York, and the two are engaged. He is a self-made investment banker who has worked since he was ten, and he knows little about her; he is surprised to find that she is the older daughter of Edward Seton, an extremely wealthy banker, and that her family occupies an enormous Park Avenue mansion. In the house he meets Linda, Julia's younger sister, and their brother Ned, who drinks heavily and answers to their father. Johnny confides in Linda his plan to stop working at thirty and take a long holiday to find the meaning of life. Edward Seton is stunned by the engagement until he looks into Johnny's work history, then plans an elaborate New Year's Eve party.

- Columbia intended the film to reunite The Awful Truth co-stars Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, but George Cukor cast Katharine Hepburn instead, borrowing her from RKO. Joan Bennett and Ginger Rogers were considered for Hepburn's role, and Rita Hayworth was tested for the part of Julia.
- A scene set in the snows of Lake Placid, New York, was shot in Bishop, California as a way to open up the stage play for the screen. Director George Cukor disliked the scene and cut it, leaving only a few still photographs, one of them on a lobby card, as remnants.
- The character of Linda Seton, played by Katharine Hepburn, was loosely based on the socialite Gertrude Sanford Legendre.
- Katharine Hepburn had been Hope Williams's understudy in the original Broadway production of the play, and played the part on stage for only one performance before taking the role in the film.
