Plot summary
French forces under Napoleon occupy Spain, and an enormous siege cannon is abandoned when the Spanish retreat is slowed. French horsemen are sent out to locate it. Spain's ally Britain orders Captain Anthony Trumbull, a Royal Navy ordnance officer, to secure the gun before the French recover it. Trumbull reaches the Spanish headquarters and finds it evacuated, occupied instead by guerrillas under Miguel, who hates the French. Miguel promises to help move the cannon only if it is first turned on the walls of Ávila. Juana, Miguel's mistress, travels with the band. The gun is hauled across rivers and over mountains toward the city.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was shot on location in Spain amid persistent rumors that Sinatra took his part only to be near his wife, Ava Gardner, who was away shooting The Sun Also Rises; when he realized there was to be no reconciliation he hurriedly left, asking director Stanley Kramer to condense his scenes into an abbreviated schedule, and Kramer obliged.
- Cary Grant, pleased to be away from his troubled marriage to Betsy Drake, pursued a serious romance with co-star Sophia Loren during the shoot, but Loren went on to marry her mentor and agent Carlo Ponti later that year, and they remained together until his death in 2007.
- The giant cannon at the center of the film appears to have been based on the Jaivana Cannon, a real prototype from Jaipur, India, which still exists and is one of the largest cannons ever constructed.
