Plot summary
Lord Honiton sends his friend Ernest Bliss to Sir James Aldroyd, and the doctor says the trouble is too much money: a year of living on a few pounds a week would cure it. Insulted, Bliss bets him £50,000 that he can support himself for a year on what he earns and leave his inheritance untouched. He rides the Underground out to Stepney Green and takes an attic room, then falls behind on the rent. With no experience, he talks Mr. Masters into hiring him to sell Alpha stoves. Three weeks pass without a sale, and Masters' secretary, Frances Clayton, tells him the firm may close.
