Plot summary
Anna Rose has a generous heart and a firm belief in the innocence of children. She and her husband George, an engineer whom everyone calls Poppy, are raising three children of their own: Trot, Tim and Teenie. On a visit to an orphanage, Anna decides to foster a child. The girl who comes to the house is Jane, thirteen years old and deeply unhappy, and she is to stay with the family for two weeks. Jane is resentful of the arrangement, and Poppy is unhappy about his wife's decision. Jane, an orphan, has already made one attempt on her own life.
