Plot summary
Letty Strong is fifteen when she gets pregnant and leaves home. An older man named Fuzzy takes her in, and her son Mickey is born in the back room of Fuzzy's bookstore. She supports herself by grifting, and she trains Mickey in the same trade so that no one can mistreat him. Fuzzy is strongly against the way the boy is being raised. Entertaining buyers brings in the money that keeps her friend Steve Karns in business. Mickey, now seven, skips school one day to wander around town. A milk truck strikes him as he roller-skates in the street, and the driver is Malcolm Trevor.

- Born to Be Bad was rejected twice by the Hays Office before it was finally approved. Loretta Young's character, an unwed mother who entertains wholesale buyers to secure contracts for her friend, had to be re-written and re-filmed so her occupation is only hinted at, and Zanuck had to cut shots of Young in her underwear and of her legs exposed to the hips.
