Plot summary
Julie Gardiner and Roger Adams meet, court and marry, their years together marked by the popular songs of each period. They wed on a spur-of-the-moment New Year's Eve and share Roger's train compartment on the way to San Francisco. Julie, expecting a child, joins Roger in Tokyo, where he works as a reporter; the 1923 earthquake there costs them the baby. The couple return to California, and their friend Applejack Carney urges them to adopt. Roger is trying to keep a newspaper alive in Rosalia while Julie fits out a nursery.
