Plot summary
Cho-Cho San, high-born and still unaccustomed to the geisha life, is being trained at Goro's tea house so that the money she earns can support her mother and grandfather. Goro brings Prince Yamadori to meet her as a possible husband, but she stays withdrawn. Aboard an American steamship due in Japan for months, Lieutenant Barton persuades his friend Lieutenant Ben F. Pinkerton to skip the consul's party. At Goro's the officers watch geishas dance and play music. Pinkerton wanders into another room, sees a dancing silhouette through a screen, and finds Cho-Cho San rehearsing. Yamadori, told that she has been with a naval officer, vows never to enter the house again, and Goro threatens to shame her family. Barton explains that marriage to a Japanese woman is only a formality, so Pinkerton announces he will marry her.
