Plot summary
After her mother's death in Marseilles, Sylvia Scarlett and her father Henry face the gambling debts that force him to leave the country. Sylvia gives him the money her mother left her and dresses as a boy, Sylvester, so they can travel together without drawing notice. Henry also carries lace stolen from the factory where he kept the books, hoping to sell it in England, but customs officers seize it and take his money as a fine. On the train to London they find Jimmy Monkley, the man from the ferry, in their compartment, and the three join forces for a series of con games that come to nothing. Monkley brings Henry to a London house where the housemaid Maudie Tilt works.
