Plot summary
Joe "the Greek" Adams makes his living as a gambler and a grifter, and he has two problems. He and his partner Zepp have both received draft notices, and only one of them can stay out of the army by taking the identity of Joe Bascopoulos, a dead underling who had been classified unfit. They gamble for that chance and for their share of the gambling ship, and Joe wins. Money to bankroll the ship is the second problem. Joe persuades Captain Veronica Steadman, who runs the local war relief organization, to let him hold a charity casino that will pay to outfit a relief ship. Her lieutenant, the socialite Dorothy Bryant, does not trust him.
