Plot summary
Cary Grant narrates his own story, beginning with his boyhood as Archie Leach, the son of a tailor in Bristol. His parents' marriage breaks down; his father leaves, and his mother is absent from his childhood, so an aunt raises him. A friend brings him into the variety theater, and he joins a traveling company. On its first tour overseas he stays behind in New York, gradually finding work on Broadway as a handsome antagonist. A Hollywood contract with Paramount follows, and the man from Bristol becomes a major star. He talks about the screen image he built and the poverty he came from.
