Biography

Steven Seagal is an American martial artist, actor, producer, screenwriter, and musician. He first taught aikido in Japan and later in Los Angeles before making his film acting debut in Above the Law (1988), which was considered the first American film to use aikido in fight scenes. He followed with Hard to Kill (1990), Marked for Death (1990), and Out for Justice (1991), then gained wider fame as Navy SEAL Casey Ryback in Under Siege (1992) and its sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995). In 1994 he directed and starred in On Deadly Ground. After later films including Executive Decision (1996) and Exit Wounds (2001), his work moved mostly to direct-to-video releases, though he played a villain in Machete (2010). On television he starred in Steven Seagal: Lawman. He also released two albums, Songs from the Crystal Cave and Mojo Priest, and was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame in 2004.

Big break
Seagal's first film role came about because his aikido student, agent Michael Ovitz, was convinced he had movie star potential and financed his screen test, which led Warner Bros. to offer him a contract.
Beyond film
In 2004, Seagal put out his debut album, Songs from the Crystal Cave. The music blends pop, world, country, and blues, and the album includes duets with Tony Rebel, Lt. Stichie, Lady Saw, and Stevie Wonder.
A change of course
Seagal served as a Reserve Deputy Chief in the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana. In the late 1980s, then-sheriff Harry Lee asked him to join after he taught deputies marksmanship, unarmed combat and martial arts, and his rank there was ceremonial.
