Plot summary
William Lansing is a Vietnam veteran and a former covert agent who settled in Northern Alaska, where he works at a wildlife refuge. He has long sent money to Irena Morawska, a thirteen-year-old orphan in Warsaw, and the two have kept up a pen-pal correspondence. One day the letters from her simply stop, so Lansing travels to Poland to find out why. There he learns that the orphanage where Irena lived, funded by unsuspecting donors abroad, serves as a front for a trafficking ring led by Faisal. Girls it holds are sold to buyers around the world. Through their letters Lansing taught Irena to use secret codes, and she uses them to tell him where Faisal takes her. He follows that trail with Kasia Lato, a Polish police detective.
