Trailer

Plot summary

Aegis Oil operates refineries and rigs across Alaska, and its operations have stirred mounting public opposition. Two decades earlier the company bought drilling rights from the local tribal council; under that arrangement the rights go back to the Native Americans unless Aegis 1, the company's largest new platform, is running by a fixed deadline. Chief executive Michael Jennings, unwilling to slip past it, orders crews to install substandard parts. A blowout hits foreman Hugh Palmer's rig, and Forrest Taft, a trained firefighter, puts out the fire. Both men question the company's safety record. Taft gets into the computer files and finds the faulty parts; Palmer tries to notify the EPA. Jennings learns of this and of Taft's look at restricted records.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about On Deadly Ground (1994)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Steven Seagal originally planned his directorial debut with a Godfather-style Mafia drama called Man of Honor at Fox, but when financing partners Morgan Creek and a Saudi prince both pulled out, Fox canceled the project and Seagal had to personally pay $1 million to crew already attached to it.
  • Warner Bros. delayed the Alaska shoot by blaming insufficient snowfall, but the National Weather Service recorded 47 inches of snow on the ground in Valdez at the time, fueling industry rumors the studio was really stalling because the budget had ballooned past $45 million due to Seagal's struggles controlling the production.
  • The film was originally titled Rainbow Warrior, but it had to be renamed after a conflict with Greenpeace over the name, which belonged to the environmental group's real ship, while rival studio Carolco was separately developing an actual Greenpeace film called Warriors of the Rainbow.
  • On Deadly Ground won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Director, and Razzie founder John Wilson later went further, naming it in his book as one of The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made.
