- Co-writer Joe Halpin said the film had been shot two ways, one explaining the villains' actions as the work of European mobsters and the other as the work of aliens. Asked which would survive, he answered "Who knows", saying the producers and Seagal would agree in post-production.
- When the film was first announced as Harvester, the villains were described as aliens, with actress Ileana Lazariuc listed as "alien queen"; the finished film told a significantly different story.
- Critics and fans have speculated that leaving the story unresolved during principal photography led to the pervasive overdubbing of dialogue by other actors, particularly Seagal's; his 2005 film Submerged appears to have gone through a similar process.
