Plot summary
A virus has spread across the world, turning the people it infects into flesh eaters and blood drinkers. No cure exists, and only a handful of survivors are left. Tao commands a squad of hunters who track the creatures down. In an abandoned hospital packed with the infected, six survivors who have not been turned keep apart from one another, frightened of the people around them. They must reach the only working exit before the emergency power gives out and shuts them in; with the stairways and elevators blocked, they have to climb level by level. Cross tries to hold back Lieutenant Waters from launching a bombing raid on the hospital, which an army base plans to hit at dawn.
