Plot summary
Wong Dai, a Chinese drug kingpin, convenes a merger with dealers who control heroin in Paris, the New York drug trade from Chinatown, an Eastern European cartel, drug exports from Shanghai, a Paris cartel, and drug money in London. Robert Burns, a Yale archaeology professor and recent Winthrop Award winner, discovers that his expedition near the China-Kazakhstan border serves as cover for Wong Dai's smuggling operation. Burns and his assistant Luo Yi flee, and Luo Yi is killed in the gunfire. At the border, smugglers have framed Burns, and he ends up in a Chinese prison. There, narcotics officer Tommie Ling and DEA agent Ed Gray question him, hoping to use him as bait to catch the smugglers.
