Parley Baer
Biography
Parley Baer was an American actor whose career spanned radio, television, and film. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he trained in drama at the University of Utah before working as a circus ringmaster and publicist. He launched his radio career in 1933 and in 1952 took the role of Chester on the radio version of Gunsmoke, the part that made him best known. On television, he often played fussy officials and neighbors, including Mayor Stoner on The Andy Griffith Show and Arthur J. Henson on The Addams Family. His film credits included Follow Me, Boys! (1966), The Ugly Dachshund (1966), Those Calloways (1964), The Young Lions (1958), and Dave (1993), where he played a Senate majority leader. He also voiced Ernie Keebler in commercials and appeared in many other series. He died in 2002.

In 1952, Parley Baer took the part of Chester on the radio Gunsmoke, the trusty who helped Marshal Matt Dillon in the jailhouse. He came up with the character's full name, Chester Wesley Proudfoot, on his own.
