Plot summary
Dental nurse Jane Adams brings the murder of her boss to private detective Brad Runyan after the police treat it as an accident. Runyan's attention turns to Roy Clark, a patient who disappeared after his appointment and was last seen driven away by the chauffeur of Gene Gordon, a probable gangster. Runyan tracks down Pat Boyd, once Clark's lover and briefly his wife, and she tells him that Clark had served time in jail. From the police he learns what the sentence was for: the theft of half a million dollars that was never recovered. Among those Runyan has to consider is Ed Deets, a circus clown who once shared a cell with Clark.
