Plot summary
Harold Ventimore, an architect, becomes engaged to Sylvia Kenton, and her father Anthony, an Egyptology professor, cuts short a trip to Europe to stop the marriage. At an auction Harold buys a brass bottle meant to please his future in-laws, then learns they bought the same one a day earlier. Opening the lid releases Fakrash Al-Amash, a djinn King Solomon imprisoned three thousand years ago. Harold takes the apparition for a joke and calls the police, but Fakrash is gone when they arrive. The djinn then lends a hand: a client, Samuel Wackerbath, offers Harold a settlement project and an advance, credit Fakrash claims for himself. Harold's employer, William Beevor, believes Harold is working behind his back and dismisses him.
