Plot summary
In the 1920s, Rose Hovick sets her mind on a stage career for her daughters and pursues it relentlessly. The family act features Baby June, while June's older sister Louise travels with them. With the agent Herbie Sommers working alongside her, Rose keeps the girls moving from town to town, and the act wins a spot on the Orpheum Circuit.

- Rosalind Russell's gravelly singing voice was blended with that of contralto Lisa Kirk, whose mimicry of Russell carries the final number "Rose's Turn". Kirk's full vocal was released on the original soundtrack but was not used in the finished film, while Russell's own vocals were later rediscovered on scratchy acetate discs and included as bonus tracks on the CD reissue.
- Marni Nixon had dubbed Natalie Wood's singing in West Side Story the year before, but Wood did her own singing in Gypsy, performing "Little Lamb" live on set. Rosalind Russell also sang live for "Mr. Goldstone, I Love You" and the "Small World" reprise, not Lisa Kirk.
- "Together Wherever We Go" was cut from Gypsy before its release but kept on the soundtrack album. The DVD release includes both it and the shortened "You'll Never Get Away from Me" as bonus features, taken from a 16-millimeter print of inferior quality.
