Plot summary

Circulation at The Day, a large New York City newspaper, keeps falling, and its managing editor, Ed Hutcheson, is loyal to its publisher, Margaret Garrison, the widow of the man who founded it. Garrison expects to sell the paper to buyers who plan to shut it down, and her daughters, Kitty and Alice, who hold most of the stock, want the sale to go through. Garrison refuses. Hutcheson's hope is a story large enough to keep the paper in business, so he puts his reporters on the death of a young woman, Bessie Smith, and on whatever part the racketeer Tomas Rienzi had in it.
