Jean Peters

Biography

Jean Peters was an American film actress who built her career at 20th Century Fox in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Canton, Ohio, she studied at Ohio State University and won the Miss Ohio State Pageant, which led to a screen test and a seven-year contract with Fox. Her first film was Captain from Castile (1947), where she replaced Linda Darnell opposite Tyrone Power. She became known for playing unglamorous, down-to-earth women rather than sirens, despite her role in Pickup on South Street (1953). She also appeared in Viva Zapata! (1952) and Niagara (1953). Later came Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), and she was critically acclaimed for Apache (1954). She retired from films after A Man Called Peter (1955), then returned to television later in Winesburg, Ohio (1973) and The Moneychangers (1976). She also appeared in Peter and Paul (1981), and her final acting role was on Murder, She Wrote in 1988.
