Plot summary
Captain Brad Parker, an American paratrooper whose leg was broken in a parachute jump, is posted to London, where Colonel Alexander Timmer sends him on an errand. He meets Brigadier Russell, a Dunkirk veteran who complains about the behavior of the American soldiers around his village, and Russell's daughter Valerie, who is engaged to John Wynter, a lieutenant colonel in the British Commandos. Wynter is posted overseas. Brad stays in London, and he and Valerie become lovers. When Brad is posted overseas, he volunteers for Special Force Six, the joint American, British and Canadian commando unit Colonel Timmer leads, to get back to London. Its mission is an assault on a German gun emplacement on the Normandy coast.

- With only two landing craft and eighty soldiers, director Henry Koster reused a back projection of the same take so the troops seemed to pour out of twice as many craft during the Normandy landing.

According to Richard Todd, his character lived in the original script and Robert Taylor's character went back to his wife, but Todd asked that his own character be killed instead.- Edmond O'Brien's character being relieved of command mirrors US Army Ranger Major Cleveland A. Lytle, who was stripped of his command at Pointe du Hoc by Colonel James Rudder for calling the assault suicidal.
- The film was originally planned to be made in Britain with Jean Simmons as the female lead, but it was shot on the 20th Century Fox backlot instead.
