Plot summary
Cam Calloway traps fur on timber land near the backwoods town of Swiftwater, Vermont, and his neighbors take him for an eccentric. He was raised among the Micmac. His wife Liddy and their sixteen-year-old son Bucky share the house, and Cam's lifelong wish is a sanctuary for the wild geese that pass over the town on their migrations. Bucky has caught his father's dedication; Liddy does not. Cam needs $1100 for thirty acres of marshland around Swiftwater Lake, where he means to plant corn for the geese, and the last mortgage payment on his own land is nearly due.
