Vera Miles

Biography

Vera Miles is an American former actress who was born in Boise City, Oklahoma, and grew up in Kansas. She moved to Los Angeles in 1948 and began with small television and film roles before her first credited part in The Rose Bowl Story. John Ford cast her in the Western The Searchers (1956) and later in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), while Alfred Hitchcock directed her in The Wrong Man (1956). Under a personal contract with Hitchcock, she was publicized as a possible successor to Grace Kelly. She played Lila Crane in Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and later returned to the role in Psycho II (1983). Other credits include Follow Me, Boys! (1966), Hellfighters (1968), and Molly and Lawless John (1972). She also appeared on television in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Fugitive, I Spy, and Columbo, and she retired after Separate Lives (1995).
