Jack Kelly
Biography
Jack Kelly was an American film and television actor who became known for playing Bart Maverick in the television series Maverick. Born in New York City, he came from a theatrical family. His early film work included an uncredited part in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (1939) and the film noir Drive a Crooked Road (1954). He also appeared in Forbidden Planet (1956). From 1957 to 1962 he shared the lead of Maverick, rotating with James Garner and later Roger Moore, and appeared in more episodes than Garner. After Maverick, he acted in films such as Commandos (1968) and Young Billy Young (1969), and hosted the game show Sale of the Century from 1969 to 1971. In 1991 he reprised Bart Maverick in The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw. He died in 1992.

Kelly appeared in about 75 episodes of Maverick, more than James Garner, because he stayed for the entire run while Garner left in 1960 after a contract dispute.
A first
After the fifth season, when Kelly was the only Maverick in new episodes, the series was canceled. Kelly said the studio never told him and that he found out about the cancellation in a newspaper article.

Kelly's first film part came in the 1939 biopic The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, where he appeared without a credit.
A change of course
During World War II, Kelly was a weather observer with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew on the first B-29 to cross the Arctic Circle.
